lowest common denominator

What happens when Insurance contracts only to protect their bottom line?

During medical school, Dr. Blackledge and several classmates, made a secret pact amongst themselves. After having assisted most of the surgeons in the hospital the students learned that a particular surgeon was contracted under their student health plan to perform a specific type of surgery on any student that needed it. As a result they each pledged that if any one of them ended up needing this surgery and were unable to communicate their wishes, then they would all make sure this surgeon would not be allowed into the operating room under any circumstances.

John Oliver offers a glimpse at what it is really like behind the curtain.

Each insurance carrier to save costs finds a doctor or clinic to contract with at the lowest possible rate. Is that how you would approach your health looking for the lowest common denominator?
